Chicklet Keyboard frm IBM PC Jr This
is the famous "chicklet" keyboard first shipped with the IBM
PC Jr. (codenamed "Peanut"). Thanks Chris Fralic for the
donation! In the summer of 1984 yours truly, DigiBarn Curator Bruce Damer,
worked at IBM Toronto Canada Lab next to an old 50s IBM factory where
this keyboard was being made. I remember overhearing the factory workers
talking in the cafeteria about this keyboard saying what a piece of #@?$%
it was and wondering how anyone could use it? It was meant to "down
market" the PC Jr. so it would not create undue competition for the
IBM PC (5150). An innovative feature of this keyboard was that it needed
no cable, instead it used an infrared (wireless) connection. This did
not always work so well so in the replacement keyboard (which had much
more ergonomic keys) IBM put in an option for a cable to connect the keyboard
to the CPU. |
